Stereotypes That Make Sense and What to Do About Them
It's tough to get rid of stereotypes and, many times, they're actually
based on some shred of truth or at least a tidbit from history. They're
fertile fodder for many comedians, so what's the harm? I guess that depends
on what side of the stereotype you're standing on.
Try this one on for size: "Business executives are all crooks. They don't
care about us." You might say, "My employees know that's not true." Do
they? Ever heard of ENRON?
While the dust hasn't begun to settle on that fiasco, it's important
to remember that ENRON's employees loved working for the company and its
executives. Every former employee interviewed stated that right up front.
So, there's a new stereotype in town and you can bet your employees are
paying attention.
The point is that stereotyping can be harmful, and allowing it to thrive
in the workplace will cost you. It stifles individual creativity, hinders
productivity, and is a catalyst for employee turnover.
You have to power to turn that around by promoting diversity awareness,
and creating an environment that celebrates people's differences, recognizes
the value of those differences, and gets everyone working together to
achieve their personal goals - and your company goals.
